The Great American Desert

So I'm living the sweet life in So Cal. Last weekend was Santa Barbara, this weekend was Vegas, next is San Francisco. The miles and fistfuls of crumpled receipts are piling up.

Before I left for Vegas, my friend, 千草ちゃん, lamented that I'd be driving the desert alone, that there was nothing to see, no one to talk to. But the experience just of driving to Sin City and back is enough for several posts.

I'm going to accept permission from myself for a mocha-induced tangent here: for years, I've cut my teeth on poems, which I think is the best way for any writer to learn about the use of language. Especially if you're given to writing economical poems -- how do use the fewest words to the greatest effect?

Anyway, the effect of that training has been compression, bottling up, a tendency toward over-editing, a degree, almost, of self-censorship. What's more natural to me, I think, is to spin spin spin. To be more like Garcia Marquez than Calvino. So maybe I shouldn't go for the short blog. Maybe I should just let it go (the way I've let my gut go over the past few weeks -- sheesh).

So Vegas. What a fiasco. My liver cries out from the Ninth Level of my booze-soaked intestinal hell. "Why, why, why?" I'll go in depth later. Promise. But now I've gotta write write write.

wow... this i have to hear. I want to hear the part you don't want to talk about. :D

Calvino. Hmm... you'll understand what you've you've forgotten when you've forgotten to remember what you understood before... right.

Calvino. Not one of my favorite writers, really. Probably just too modern for me. Actually. I would take the first 4 paragraphs of the first piece I've read of yours over the entire works of Calvino. When I showed my friend, she agreed. She loves your writing. Says it reminds her of some one with immense talent.

just my two cents. :)

I hope to see some pictures.

Thanks again -- kind words as always! :D Is your friend an LJer? I'd love to return the favor by reading her blog too.

Calvino's "Invisible Cities" is a great book. An imaginary conversation between Marco Polo and Kublai Khan. Marco keeps telling him about all of these incredible cities he's visited, in short one or two page vignettes, and eventually you start to see patterns emerge. It's a good book to read, I think, while traveling.

Yeah -- what we need is a bionic liver. Titanium. All kinds of crazy molded plastic.

LOL! the liver illustration is classic.

yeah, poems are the best. more power, less words. but over-editing is bad. happy writing!

:( I know, mine too. There's a great Bright Eyes song called "Lover Don't Have to Love." Maybe we should write one called "Liver Don't Have to Live."

I've actually been reading at work! *gasp!*

Do you like Nick Hornby? I am rather enjoying his new book. :o)

My favorite author is Joyce Carol Oates... check some of her work out.

Hey....I've always wanted to read one of her books. I've read some of her short fiction and loved her prose. :D

I've loved the Nick Hornby movies so far...I'm almost tempted to read "High Fidelity" after that flick.

I liked "About A Boy" better than High Fidelity. The movie High Fidelity didn't really leave good impressions on me (I fell asleep) but book was good.

His books are easy - comfy read. :o)

Yes... Oates is so prolific. I have no idea how she churns out all those works. She is bit scary looking... some of her stories are bit twisted and I have to wonder. Oates and I exchanged some e-mails when I was in HS and she was a visiting professor at Princeton. She was super nice. :o)

That's terrific. Did you just email her out of the blue because you liked her books so much? That's gutsy. Awesome! :D

Did you save the emails? Those would make interesting posts...what would you say is a good first book for her? "Mulvaneys"?

I wouldn't want to subject you to my family -- this is the other side, my mom's (Protestant) side. Lots of zaniness abounds. :D

I'll tell you all about it. Still have to catch up with the Vegas stuff. Ugh.

And you're dealing with higher percentages too (at least compared to American beer; I'm not sure about Canadian)!

[info]lazyjai

July 28 2005, 03:53:39 UTC 6 years ago

meh, that liver picture is making me think twice about drinking again.

(9 months ago, a doctor told me I had an enlarged liver. I completely abstained until Get-Drunk-in-the-Middle-of-the-Day-in-the-Middle-of-the-Week Day in April. And even then didn't drink until I visited Cali... where I drank 6/7 nights. I'm almost afraid to go back to the doc...)

in_dig_ent and I were just talking about that: the Asian male way of dealing with health problems. Ignore it! :D

California will do that to you, though. No one ever drinks in Texas, right? Oh, except our President...D'OH!
