So I'm living the sweet life in So Cal. Last weekend was Santa Barbara, this weekend was Vegas, next is San Francisco. The miles and fistfuls of crumpled receipts are piling up.
Before I left for Vegas, my friend, 千草ちゃん, lamented that I'd be driving the desert alone, that there was nothing to see, no one to talk to. But the experience just of driving to Sin City and back is enough for several posts.
I'm going to accept permission from myself for a mocha-induced tangent here: for years, I've cut my teeth on poems, which I think is the best way for any writer to learn about the use of language. Especially if you're given to writing economical poems -- how do use the fewest words to the greatest effect?
Anyway, the effect of that training has been compression, bottling up, a tendency toward over-editing, a degree, almost, of self-censorship. What's more natural to me, I think, is to spin spin spin. To be more like Garcia Marquez than Calvino. So maybe I shouldn't go for the short blog. Maybe I should just let it go (the way I've let my gut go over the past few weeks -- sheesh).
So Vegas. What a fiasco. My liver cries out from the Ninth Level of my booze-soaked intestinal hell. "Why, why, why?" I'll go in depth later. Promise. But now I've gotta write write write.

Calvino. Hmm... you'll understand what you've you've forgotten when you've forgotten to remember what you understood before... right.
Calvino. Not one of my favorite writers, really. Probably just too modern for me. Actually. I would take the first 4 paragraphs of the first piece I've read of yours over the entire works of Calvino. When I showed my friend, she agreed. She loves your writing. Says it reminds her of some one with immense talent.
just my two cents. :)
I hope to see some pictures.

Calvino's "Invisible Cities" is a great book. An imaginary conversation between Marco Polo and Kublai Khan. Marco keeps telling him about all of these incredible cities he's visited, in short one or two page vignettes, and eventually you start to see patterns emerge. It's a good book to read, I think, while traveling.

My favorite author is Joyce Carol Oates... check some of her work out.

I've loved the Nick Hornby movies so far...I'm almost tempted to read "High Fidelity" after that flick.

His books are easy - comfy read. :o)
Yes... Oates is so prolific. I have no idea how she churns out all those works. She is bit scary looking... some of her stories are bit twisted and I have to wonder. Oates and I exchanged some e-mails when I was in HS and she was a visiting professor at Princeton. She was super nice. :o)

Did you save the emails? Those would make interesting posts...what would you say is a good first book for her? "Mulvaneys"?

California will do that to you, though. No one ever drinks in Texas, right? Oh, except our President...D'OH!
